Virgil Brownfield, USS Liberty's popular ship's clerk, died in 1998.
His obituary in the Orlando Sentinel read:

VIRGIL L. BROWNFIELD, 53, Chestnut Drive, Orlando, died Sunday, Nov. 29.1998.
Mr. Brownfield was a supervisor with the U.S. Postal Service. Born in
Cedar Rapids, Iowa, he moved to Central Florida in 1975. He was Roman
Catholic. He was a Navy veteran of the Vietnam War. Survivors: parents
Leroy and Elsie, Iowa.
