Edward J. Duea was born in Minnesota, attended school in California, and served in the Navy from December 28, 1965 to October 1, 1971, achieving the rate of CTM2 (Petty Officer Second Class). He served in the ship's Materiel (electronic maintenance) division. Following the Liberty attack, he served a tour at Todendorf, Germany.
