NSA Deputy Director comments
on the Israeli excuse
for attacking USS Liberty
In a handwritten note of August 26, 1967, NSA Deputy Director Louis W. Tordella commented, "A nice whitewash for a group of ignorant, stupid and inept [epithet deleted]." (National Security Agency, Center for Cryptologic History Historical Collection, Series VII, Crisis Files, Box 16)
Assistant Secretary Hughes had sent a copy of the decision to NSA Director General Marshall Carter on August 22.
