Ensign David George Lucas was USS Liberty's Deck Division Officer, responsible for all of the equipment and operations on the ship's open decks. He also stood watch on the bridge as Officer of the Deck underway, and was on the bridge with Captain McGonagle during much of the attack and for several hours following the attack. He received a Silver Star for heroism for his extraordinary performance during the attack and a Purple Heart for his injuries.
